I want to let you in on a little secret: There’s no ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ way to set up a business. Right and Wrong are a matter of opinion. And that’s really what it comes down to: your opinion. What you want.
So what do you want for your business? It doesn’t matter if you’re just dabbling in some affiliate marketing or starting a blog for some side income. Or if you’re a full time online marketer, building your multiple streams of income.
You need to know what you want. I’ve talked about this before. If you’re just getting up everyday and winging it, then:
- You’re going to get no where fast and
- You just created another dead end job for yourself.
So a clear goal is important. We’ve been over that. But we also need a Vision. What do you want your business to look like? In 1 year? 3 years? 10 years?
It’s a tough question, especially at the very beginning. Most people ride the excitement and thrill that comes with starting something new, and they ride it for quite some time. But eventually it fizzles. It dies out. And if you don’t know what you’re trying to build, you’re most likely to quit. To leave it behind and look for something else. A new thrill.
If you’re like most people, when you’re starting out you’re putting in long days. There were some days where I’d work into the middle of the night regularly. And when I wasn’t, I was working 8-10 hours a day 7 days a week. I know 8-10 hour is not a lot for the 9-5 crowd. But when you’re working on creating something for yourself, you’re actually working that whole time. It’s different from being in the office and taking frequent breaks to spread your work out. And doing it everyday adds up. It takes a toll.
An 8-16 hour per day schedule is pretty all over the place. And in the beginning of something new, maybe that’s ok. When the adrenelaine and excitement is going, we want to work all night at something. And that’s great. We want to be doing something that excites us like this.
But what about a year from now? 3 years from now?
The fact is that it’s hard to ask yourself this question right at the beginning. But that’s when it needs to be asked. No one wants their business running their lives and chaining them to a computer. Freedom was part of the dream that we’re chasing.
We need to start our business – and every project within it – with the goal of having it run without us managing it. Without us being there every hour of the day to make it run.
Let’s think of our business like a car. You can get a manual for any car to break it down to every last nut and bolt. Telling you exactly what purpose everything serves and how it’s supposed to work. The same with any appliance. And they’re all manufactured the same exact way. In the same order. If you can imagine a factory line, every worker has one job and that is their focus. The process is broken down into the simplest task possible and assigned to someone.
That’s the vision you need to have for your business if you want it to one day run without you. As you create your articles, media buys, advertising, traffic generation, etc… Make sure you’re recording everything you’re doing. Mold it into a process that you repeat exactly the same way every time. Break it down into the simplest steps you can. Create a manual for your business, so thorough and simplified, so that you could hand it to someone and they could run your business for you.
So while that may not be the goal in the first month or three, we need to go about our work with that in mind. In the short run, it will make us a lot more efficient. And that’s reason enough. But how and why?
- It Makes Our Work Measurable
- When we just get up everyday and just start working endlessly, we tend to just get busy. But maybe not productive. We don’t have a clear picture of what we’re accomplishing. Or what is wasting our time.
- When everything is broken down and recorded, we can see what’s working and what’s not working. We can then – on a regular basis – make sure that we’re focusing our time on the things that work. That generate revenue. And trash the tasks that are wasting time and money.
- Here’s how I plan my week, adapted from Tony Robbins and some of the more successful people I know. Use this worksheet to plan you’re week and you’ll see changes. Guaranteed. You’re welcome.
- Allows for testing
- We all know that testing ir important. REALLY important. But if there’s not a clear record of what we’re testing out, with results, then we’re just guessing. We’ll spend our time ‘trying this’ and ‘trying that’. Thinking that eventually we’ll find something that works and then we’ll run with it.
- Testing needs to be done methodically. The plan needs to be laid out in advance. You need to change one thing at a time and examine results. And eventually it will lead to finding the sweet spot for your marketing. This takes time. And it takes clarity. And it needs to be measured.
- Allows for outsourcing in increments
- When you do start outsourcing, it need to be one thing at time. Maybe your articles. Maybe your social media. Or your PPC or your media buys. But one thing at a time.
- If your business isn’t measurable and you don’t have your ‘manual’ set up, you’re going to waste a lot of money outsourcing.
- You have to be able to give very specific, step by step instructions for every task/project you outsource. If you want a successful experience, that is.
- Allows for more focus
- When everything is measured, it allows you to trash what doesn’t work. It let’s you know every morning what needs to be done that day. Specifically.
- Tasks then get completed faster. More efficiently.
- A clear game plan creates focus. And decreases stress.
