5 Link Building Techniques That Stink

Back in the day, you could set out and get 100 links all with the same anchor text and rank for that particular keyword. Well, those days are sadly over. While backlinks are still king, you have to realize there are some ways that just plain out stink if you’re setting out to get them. In 2012, here are five link building strategies that you will probably want to avoid.

#1 Article Directories

Article directories such as EzineArticles and GoArticles are as bad as they get. Sure, while they want unique content off the bat, where does this content go afterwards? It gets spread across the web with hundreds of other websites. Let’s face it. If you’re browsing the web, you probably don’t go to Ezine for information right? While they used to be great to rank your page for particular keyword, article marketing is sadly no more.

#2 Blog Comments

While some blog comments are awesome, the bad ones are when you use your name as the anchor text of your website. Seriously, your name is Payday Loans or Mortgage Lenders. If you’re going to leave a comment on a blog, make it informative, and when you leave your name, actually leave your name! Even if it’s a fake name, a name such as Bob@ABC is a lot better than SEO Company.

#3 Blog Networks

Yes, blog networks such as BuildMyRank and others thrived for a year or so. It was so easy! All you would do is write a crappy 100 word article and you would throw your anchor text inside of the post. Once you had 200 or so pages posted, your keywords would skyrocket. Sadly, Google is a lot smarter than you think. While these networks still exist, it’s best to steer clear of them.

#4 Automation

Xrumer, AutoPligg and more can submit your URL to thousands of websites. What good is it to throw your link on 10,000 pages? Seriously, Google knows that a website on toasters isn’t going to get 10,000 links overnight. This strategy won’t only hurt your rankings, but it will kill your website trust score. If it’s automated and easy, the links are going to stink!

#5 Profile Links

Like Xrumer, some people prefer to head to a forum and throw up a link. Again, this is a strategy that doesn’t work. Don’t buy lists that show you where you can post your links and don’t waste your time filling out 500 profiles. While it’s okay to fill out a few forum profiles, just make sure that you’re active on that particular forum.

What Makes A Great Link?

Today, it’s still relatively easy to build links if you create a great source. By creating that great source, what you’re going to find is that people are going to naturally link to you. I know it’s clichĂ©, but it’s so true! If you want to get the links yourself, then it’s best to reach out to authoritative sites that are trusted. Make sure that these sites are updated and reputable. Look for resource pages, ask to provide content or even become creative by offering software, infographics, etc. By thinking outside of the box, your business can still thrive today! —
